POLICE TO CONDUCT

SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT

The Overland Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Friday, July 25th from 10 PM to 3 AM at an unnamed location.

Working with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), this checkpoint will be dedicated to the memory of Krystle Mobley-Ward.

In the early morning hours of September 7, 2006, Krystle Mobley-Ward was coming home from work on Route 21 near Jefferson College in Hillsboro when a drunk driver crossed the center line. Krystle did all she could to try to avoid the oncoming, including swerving to the far right to avoid the being struck. Despite her efforts the other car slammed into her car. Krystle was killed instantly.

The driver of the other vehicle was sentenced for involuntay manslaughter in February, 2008, and is currently serving his eight year sentence with the Missouri Department of Corrections.

Krystle had only been married a month and had just returned from her honeymoon when the crash happened. Krystle leaves behind a son, husband, parents, sister, brother, grandmother and many friends.

"The Overland Police Department conducts sobriety checkpoints to prevent tragedies such as that experienced by this family," said Chief James Herron. "If our officers encounter a drunk driver, they will be arrested."

The department partners with MADD to draw attention to the problem of drunk driving.

The idea to partner with MADD to recognize drunk driving victims came about several years. "We want the family and friends of the victims to know that their loved one is not forgotten," added Herron. "We feel it helps those effected with the healing process, and their stories help enlighten others to the true tragedies of drinking and driving."

Through enforcement and education the Overland Police Department is dedicated to making area roadways safer.
